At 20.00 hours on the 12th instant, while the Star Ferry boat was coming from Kowloon to Hongkong, a Chinese widow named Lau Wai U, aged 30 years, jumped overboard in an attempt to commit suicide. Mr. F. L. Silva of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Co.,jumped in after her and kept the woman afloat until they were both taken on board. The woman was then taken in charge of by Dr. J. Castro and brought to his family house at No.38 Queen's Road Central, top floor. where she was given dry clothing and food and was later taken to the Central Police Station and detained for enquiries.

The woman states that she has no money, no friends and no food, so she thought that she would end her life. The woman seems quite allright in her mind. Dr. astro stated that if the woman is allowed to go he is willing to give her employment.
